Scripture: 1 Kings 3 or pages 262 – 264 in the Golden Children’s Bible

Target Age Group:  1st through 6th grade

Welcome the children to the classroom and chat with them about their week as they gather around the table.

Pray and ask God to teach the children not just head knowledge, but also heart knowledge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you could have any wish come true, what would you ask for?  (Let the children each have a chance to tell you what they would ask for.)
In today’s lesson there was a king who had the chance to have whatever wish he wanted to be granted.  What do you think that he asked for?  Let’s read the story and find out…
Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to 1 Kings 3 or page 262 in The Golden Children’s Bible.
(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)
Discussion:
  • Who became the king of Israel after David?  Solomon, David’s son.
  • What did God say to Solomon in a dream?  He told him to ask Him for whatever he wanted.
  • What could he have asked for? Long life, riches, death of his enemies, etc.
  • What would you have asked for?
  • What did Solomon ask for? An understanding heart so that he could be a good judge for the people.
  • Did God like his answer?  Yes.  God was very pleased.
  • Why do you think that would please God?  Because it was a very unselfish thing to ask.  He was not concerned about himself.  He was concerned about the people.  A good leader is a servant of the people.
  • Did God give him wisdom?  Yes. He made him a very wise king.
  • What else did God give him?  Riches and honor.  And he promised him a long life if he obeyed God’s commands.
  • How did Solomon thank the Lord?  He offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
  • What were the two women fighting over?  A baby.  They both claimed to be the mother.
  • How did King Solomon discover which one was the true mother? He was going to have the child divided in half with a sword.  The real mother then offered the other woman the child in order to spare his life.
  • After that, the word spread to all of the nations around Israel about how wise he was.
  • Do you think that you need to be wise?
  • How should you get wisdom?  Ask God for it.
  • What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?  You might know a lot of facts.  That is knowledge. But wisdom is using knowledge to help others and serve the Lord.
  • Can you think of another wise King in the Bible?  Jesus!  He loves us and always knows what is best for us.
  • Let’s pray and ask God to make us wise, and let’s thank him for giving us Jesus, the perfect King, who always knows what is best for us…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Have the children use colors or pastels to draw their own vision of the story on a sketch pad page.  Or have them color a color page related to the story.
